Threading Alfa sewing machine

Before threading an Alfa sewing machine you have to follow a series of preparations that you can see in the following video:

Once we have made the preparations, we can proceed to threading. Here is another video to make the process much more illustrative and practical:

It is always one of those most complicated moments. Or so we thought, because nowadays it won't be so much anymore. Threading the Alfa sewing machine can be almost child's play. Some models such as Alfa Next 30 or 40, have a kind of drawings as an arrow, at the top. In this way, we will know the steps to follow.

  • We place the thread spool at the top and drag it to the left. We will see a kind of hook through which we will pass it.
  • We take it straight down. We will pass it behind the colored area.right where the number 2 appears and a new up arrow.
  • The thread will go up again until it reaches number 3. You will pass it through its hook and back down again in search of the next number.
  • You have to place the thread at the height of the needle in order to finish the threading.

History of Alfa sewing machines

Sewing machine Alfa without pedal

Who has not had at home or has not known someone who has had any of the following Alfa machines? Well, they have a long history and for that, we must go back to 1920. In addition to being important this year, because it is its birth, it is not less important Éibar. A town in the Basque Country that saw the birth of the firm that so long after would still be so present.

Initially, the company known as Alfa starts working on firearmsat that time we are talking about 1892. This was their main production, but it seems that they did not have enough money to be able to move forward. In addition to several crises and strikes that made them rethink the business. Times were changing and they decided to bet on sewing machines. A potential idea that little by little took its course and began to bear fruit. The world of sewing was booming, so a helping hand was always welcome.

From 1922 onwards, patents were issued and the brand name Alfa appeared. But it is true that it was not until 1925 when the first ideas of sewing machines really appeared. Undoubtedly, an idea that was the first in Spain and with it, revolutionized the sector. It was in 1927 when about 175 units of this product were produced per year. A year later, the process accelerated even more because a large order was placed with the aim of introducing sewing machines in schools.

Due to the Spanish Civil War The company also had a big break in its production, until it was rescued in the 1940s. With the passage of time, in the 1950s, it once again positioned itself as the great reference in terms of production, despite the fact that other important names were also already tackling the field. The more it grew, the more it also developed additional actions in the form of social services for all its employees. A long trajectory that was again affected by the great crisis that arose at the end of the 80s. But the 1990s arrived and with private capital, they were able to restart the company again.

If you've come this far, it's because you're still not quite sure.

  1. Good morning, I have an Alfa Model 482 sewing machine, the zigzag sprocket has been damaged and I need to replace it. Can you tell me where I should go to buy it?
And if the model 482 is already outdated, which pinion of the Alfa machines could replace it?

  2. Hello, good afternoon,

My mother has an old Alfa World machine that needs to be replaced by another one.

Of all the machines you recommend on your site, which would be the most similar in terms of handling? My mother is 80 years old and if the machine is not the same or very similar she will not be able to use it.

Thanks in advance for your help

    • Hi Sara,

The Alfa World machine is very old so you will find quite a difference (for the better) with any of the current models, even the most basic. For its value for money, perhaps the most complete is the Style 40.

It has many types of stitches, 4-step automatic buttonholer and 70W of power. You are sure to love it.

If you have any other questions, let me know.

          • Hi Isabel,

An equivalent could be the Alfa Style 40, it has some more stitch design but the power is similar. Its price is quite affordable, so it's a great buy if you don't need anything else.

    • Hi Eva,

You won't have a problem with either model because they both have a motor with 70W of power.

If your only requirement is that it can sew on thick fabrics, then I would take the cheaper of the two models, which in this case is the Style 40.

        • Hi Eva,

The Next 45 has more stitch types (25 versus 10 for the Style 20).

On the other hand, the variable length of the Style 20 goes from 0 to 4.5mm while the Next 45 goes from 0 to 4mm.

          Otherwise they are virtually identical.

          • Hello Pilar,

The truth is that time has passed for everyone, including your Alfa machine 🙂

The current models may give you the feeling that they are worse because they have more plastic and, a priori, seem less robust.

However, when it comes to sewing, you are going to notice an important leap in quality. Today's machines sew better, easier, offer many stitch designs that you can customize and there are machines of all prices so you can choose the one you like the most.

If you have taken up sewing again, don't hesitate to buy a current model because you will enjoy it much more.

            Greetings!

    • Hi Chus,

It is difficult to recommend you one of the two models because in terms of features they are practically identical, there is no notable difference in power, number of stitches, handling or accessories included. Everything is the same in both models.

Therefore, in these cases we always recommend the cheapest one, which in this case is the Style Up 40.

If you have any other questions please let us know.

    • Hi Maria,

We have received your message asking for the Alfa Zart 01 sewing machine.

It is a great model, medium-high range so it covers the needs of the most frequent domestic and professional uses. If you tell us what your expectations are we can help you a little more.

Of course, take advantage of the offer because as you have seen, is with a very succulent discount and its price is usually much higher.

Thank you very much for your quick response. I explain better, it is not that my expectations are high, is that it makes me suspicious that suddenly the price is reduced by half ... I wanted to hear your opinion on this and if comparatively worth this model at this price or another model of equivalent price. I was looking at other models, but not knowing them I decided on this one for the price. I tell you that I think it's a very good offer, but for "good" has made me suspicious ... thank you very much!

Keep in mind that Amazon varies prices a lot and it's not uncommon to find things at 40 or 50% off the usual retail price.

Do not distrust that there is no problem, plus the machine is sold directly by Amazon so you will not have any problem for a possible return if you are not convinced, warranty, etc..

In terms of features, it seems to us that it will perfectly meet your needs as it is a sewing machine that is closer to the professional field than the domestic. It is a great opportunity without a doubt.

    Reply
    • Hi, Esme,

My name is Nacho and I am writing to you because of the comment you have left us on the sewing machines website.

Regarding your question, I inform you that both the Alfa Style UP 30 and the Style 30 are available. Both are still being sold.

As for the Alfa Next 830, it doesn't look like it's going to be the successor of the previous models, at least that's what the manufacturer's website says. In terms of features, they are not the same either. For example, the Style UP 30 has 23 stitches, the Style 30 has 19 stitches and the Next 830 has 21 stitches.

In terms of power, all three models have 70W.

But as we say, both the Style UP 30 and Style 30 are still being sold and there are no signs to the contrary. There may be a stockout that is causing delays and as an alternative they offer the Next 830 but we don't have that info.

      Greetings!

    • Hi, Esme,

If you buy it directly from Amazon (not from third parties that sell on Amazon) you won't have any problems. It is one of the websites with the best customer service and they will take care of any problem, sometimes they even refund the money of the purchase if after a year the machine breaks and can't be repaired, something you won't get anywhere else.

You can also call the manufacturer to take care of the machine. This is what is done in any establishment and showing the purchase invoice is enough to have it repaired.

I hope this will give you more confidence to buy online.

  10. Good afternoon,
I am considering buying a sewing machine, but I have never sewn before. It would be for home use and more for handicrafts, costumes than for everyday use. I'm hesitating between the alpha compact 100 and the alpha practick 9.

    Reply
    • Hi Sara,

I'm Nacho and I'm writing to you regarding your question about the sewing machines you mentioned.

If you've never sewn before, both are good machines to start with. However, if you think that little by little you'll be doing more complex things, the Practik 9 will last much longer because it's more powerful and also has many more possibilities in terms of stitches.

The Compakt 100 is easier to use because it is simpler. If you are just starting out and have never touched a sewing machine before, it might be a better option to start and see if you like the world of sewing. However, with either of the two you'll get it right if you're just starting out.

    • Hi Marimar,

This particular model is one of the most versatile of Alfa because you can use it whether you are learning or if you have experience in the world of sewing. It has 70W of power (similar to more expensive machines), 34 stitch designs, 6 feed rows and buttonhole in 4 steps.

As for the year of manufacture, the most accurate information we have found is that it is from 2017 so there is no forecast of any model to replace it in the short term.

Undoubtedly, one of the most complete models that is also now on offer.

        • Hello again Miriam,

If you move in those budgets, the Alfa Smart + is the best option, it is also on offer and for 40 ¤ difference is worth it because it brings many more stitches (100 against 70) among other small improvements.

If you don't want to spend so much, you also have the electronic sewing machine Alfa Compakt E500 Plus, it costs almost half the price but in terms of performance it is much lower.

Do you have any recommendations when buying online? Thank you very much! You have helped me a lot

          • Hi Miriam,

If you buy the Smart Plus from the link I sent you, you won't have any problems (and you save a lot of money). It's a machine that Amazon sells and they take care of everything if there are any problems.

Alfa also has its own technical service to which you could send the machine during the warranty period but as I say, Amazon takes care of all those steps. I hope I have helped you decide.

            Anything else you tell me.

  14. Hi, I am in doubt between the alfa practik 9 and the alfa 474. The difference in price is about 100 euros but I wanted to know your opinion as to whether it is worth paying the difference or which one would you choose. Thank you very much!

    Reply
    • Hi Marta,

The Alfa 474 is one of the latest models of the company but we like the Practik 9 very much because it is a very balanced model that even wins in some aspects to the Alfa 474 (it has 34 stitches against the 23 of the Alfa 474). Both Alfa sewing machines have the same power (70W).

The variable stitch length also offers a greater range on the Practik 9. It is only in the number of feed rows and stitch width that the Alpha 474 takes a bit of an advantage.

We don't know what you're going to use the machine for, but if it's for domestic use and handicrafts, the Practik 9 is more than adequate and it's also on sale for around 200 euros.

For that price there is nothing to justify the purchase of the Alfa 474.

Alfa next 45 and alfa next 40 spring. Which one do you recommend? Mil graciassssss!!!!

    • Hi Lorena,

Of the three models you mention, the Style Up 40 is perfectly suited to what you're looking for. You won't have any problems with plastic materials or sewing thick or hard fabrics like jeans.

Also, the good thing about this machine is that it can be found at a very good price.

The Alfa Next 45 seems to have been discontinued (it doesn't appear on the manufacturer's website) and the Alfa Next 40 spring is a recent model but with similar characteristics to the Style Up 40 but paying a little more.

We hope we have been able to help you.

At home we have an ALFA ELECTRONIC 3940. It is more than 35 years old.
Finally we are going to change it.
Can you give me some recommendations?

What's your budget? I'm guessing you'll want another Alfa seeing how long your current sewing machine has lasted.

Take a look at the ones we have on the web and if none of them fit you, tell us what you are looking for and what you want to spend to find you the model that best suits what you are looking for.

    • Hi Toni,

My name is Nacho and I'm writing to you regarding your question about which sewing machine to choose: the Style 40 or the Next 830.

Both machines are practically identical: they have the same power, variable stitch length and width, 6 rows of feed dogs, etc.

The only noticeable difference is in favour of the Style 40, which has 31 stitch patterns compared to the 21 offered by the Next 830. For the small price difference between the two, we recommend the Style 40, which is also on sale.

I am writing to you because of the message you left us on our sewing machine website.

Of the two models you mentioned, the most complete is the Zart 01 without a doubt. Much more modern but also much more expensive than the Singer Curvy model you want.

Although both are very complete electronic machines, they do not compete in the same league as the Zart 01 is the clear winner, at a much higher price.

    • Hello Ana Maria,

The Alfa 2190 is one of the most complete models you can buy today, it could practically be considered as a professional model.

The differences with respect to the 2160 are quite a lot. In favor of the Alpha 2190 you have twice as many stitches (120 vs. 60), 2 alphabets, a variable zig zag width over a wider range, etc.

Both are good machines but the difference of almost 200€ in price is noticeable in terms of features.

  21. Good morning,
I'm thinking of buying the Alfa 2190, but I'm still wondering if it does overlock cutting the fabric at the same time or not. In some of the data sheets I understand that it does, in others that it depends on the presser foot, ... I'm thinking, moreover, especially in its use in knitted fabrics (T-shirt type). Otherwise, I understand that this machine would be great to replace my Alfa Inizia of a few years ago and that it would help me with all kinds of fabrics (including jeans, upholstery ...). What is your opinion about it? any other comparable to this one? (Even from other brands...).
    Thank you!!!!

    • Hi Elisa,

In reference to your question, the Alfa 2190 is one of the most complete machines on the market, it is closer to the professional sector than to the domestic one, so you can do everything you are talking about with it.

What it doesn't have is the fabric cutter you mentioned, at least we don't see that function in the instruction manual of the model. It does have an automatic thread cutter but nothing else.

I don't know if this is a handicap for you. Maybe you need a overlocker that all of them usually include the fabric cutter.

    • Hi Pat,

Both machines that you have told us about have more than enough power although the Singer Heavy Duty is superior. If you have experience with this type of machine and you don't want it to fall short, the Singer is better.

  23. Hi, I've always had a very basic sewing machine to make small projects at home. Now, with the kids, I would like to buy one that I could use to put their names on their clothes and make more elaborate things. I am hesitating between the Alfa Smart+ and the Alfa Zart01, which one do you recommend?

    • Hello María José,

Both machines will meet your needs although for your needs, the Alpha Zart 01 has a higher number of stitches and alphabet symbols, so it is better suited for making your names and more complex work. It is also slightly cheaper.

The Alfa Smart Plus is technologically more advanced (although its features are inferior if we talk about sewing only) but it has a USB port, color screen to show the step by step of the crafts, etc..

  25. Hi Nacho, good morning.
I'm thinking of buying a sewing machine.
Having discarded the Singer brand, I'm leaning towards the Alfa 2190 and the Alfa Smart Plus. There is a price difference, but in practice I do not know what are the differences or advantages that incline me towards one model or another.
Basically I want it for patchwork, but at the same time I want it to be versatile, that is, I want it to be able to do (simple) things.
I saw some tutorial about the Smart Plus and frankly it's a revolution but I didn't see any video about the Alfa 2190, so I don't know if it's easy to use.
I don't have much idea of machine sewing, in fact I'm going to go learn.
Can you give me some advice?
    Thank you very much.

    • Hello Anxeles,

The two models are undoubtedly among Alfa's top models, so the differences are subtle but important.

For example, the Alpha 2190 has 20 more stitches than the Smart Plus.

Another important difference is in the display and operation. The Smart Plus is more intuitive thanks to its large touch screen from which you can load crafts via USB and follow the step by step directly from there, that's something you can't do with the Alfa 2190, for example.

In all other respects they are quite similar although the 2190 is more professional. Which one you choose depends on whether you prefer ease of use and cutting edge technology versus more traditional but more professional machines. Both are good machines.

Of the machines you propose, I would go for the Style 30 or the Practik 5. You've also been lucky as the Style 30 is very discounted here as it's Cyber Monday, the only thing you'd have to buy it today.

You also have a wide selection of offers on other Singer models, check them out to see if any of them suit you.

  27. Hello very good!
I'm thinking of giving a sewing machine to my girlfriend, I'll explain a little to see if you can advise me.
Right now she is making her own products for her shop, and she is working very hard, I mean hours and hours of non-stop sewing.
Some of these products have 4 or more layers of fabric, so it also has to be tough.
Until now I was with a next 30, but it has broken down, we still don't know what happened to it, but I want to give him a new one.
    What do you advise me?
Because as much as I look I do not see the difference in terms of style, next, praktic, etc. models.
The number of stitches would be the same because in the end it always makes the usual 2 or 3 stitches, so I guess that's not a determining point.
The Next 30 spring is on sale now on amazon at 110, but as it is like the one I had, I'm afraid and I don't know if it would be better a superior one.
I could pay more, 200 or 250 if needed and it's really worth it.

    Thank you

It's strange what you say about the Next 30 as it is one of the most reliable machines but like everything in this life, it can fail. Are you planning to repair it?

If you want to buy something better than what you had, the Practik 9 is a model that right now is very popular and within your budget. You can buy it on sale here.

If you have any questions, let me know.

I liked the Alfa practik 7, the Alfa 40 style and the singer heavy duty 4423. I don't know if any model that I've overlooked would be better...

    • Hello Xaro,

Of the three models you mention, the Alfa Practik 7 fits what you're looking for. You won't have any problems with plastic materials or sewing thick or hard fabrics like jeans.

However, if you want to play it safe, the Singer Heavy Duty 4423 has a 90W motor compared to the 70W of the Alpha models, so it has more power to cut through tougher fabrics such as denim.

For the small price difference, you might be better off buying the Singer Heavy Duty.

    • Hi Marian,

This is a great value for money machine that will give you the same great service as the Next 20. It doesn't have a wide range of stitches (only 12) but if that's not important to you, it's a great option that can do it all.

As for the cover, the one you are talking about is compatible with all the Alfa sewing machines of the Next and Compakt series, so you won't have any problem.

    • Good morning Bea,

I am writing because of the message you left asking about the Alfa Zart01 and Alfa 2190 sewing machines.

Both are almost professional sewing machines but with different purposes. The Zart 01 has many more stitches while the Alfa 2190 is more focused on Patchwork, hence its work surface is larger and has an extension table included.

What is true is that now you can get the Zart01 at a much cheaper price than the official one, so I tip the balance more towards this model.

  31. Hi, I'm a tailor-maker, so I use the machine a lot as it's my working tool. I have an industrial machine in my house that I use for the strongest fabrics and in my shop I had an Alfa zig zag of the old ones, but it just broke and I need to replace that machine to have one in the shop to work there, I don't want an electronic one and I don't need it to have many types of stitches since in the end I only use the most basic ones but I do need it to have some strength since if I have to sew medium strong fabrics (like thick jeans, leatherette, corduroy, coats...) I already have to take the work home to sew it in the industrial machine. I've been looking at the models and I'm a bit confused because I see them almost identical, especially the next spring and style models. I don't know whether to get the 20 or the 30 (style or spring??) or the Next 840. I had also looked at the singer heavy duty 4411 but if the features are very similar to the alphas, I'm more interested in an alpha for the price. Can you help me? Thanks

    • Hi Isabel,

I understand your doubt since all the models you mention are practically the same.

I would go for the cheapest model of all the ones you have mentioned. All of them can sew thick fabrics like jeans without any problem and if having more or less stitch is not something you care too much, better to go for the model with better value for money as they all have the same power.

In this case, the Alfa Style 20 is the most economical.

I hope I have been helpful.

The Alfa Practik 9 and the Heavy Duty are very similar models, their differences are minimal except for a few more stitches in the case of the Alfa or a minor feature in favour of the Singer.

What there is is a big price difference between both models, being the Alfa Practik 9 50 euros cheaper, so in relation quality-price we choose this model.

The only one I could recommend in that line is the Alfa Smart Plus, it has less stitch designs but it has a screen from which you can follow step by step tutorials in detail.

If you're not going to find the touchscreen overly useful, buy the Zart 01 without a doubt.

    • Hi Ana,

I am writing to you in relation to the message you have left us on our sewing machine website.

Between the Alfa Practik 9 and the Alfa 474 there is almost 100 euros difference according to the official prices of the brand.

In this aspect, the Practik 9 has more stitches but in all other aspects the Alfa 474 is more complete (more rows of feed dogs, more customizable stitches, etc). If that price difference is not a problem for you, the Alfa 474 is a clear winner.

If on the other hand you prefer to save those 100€ you can buy the Alfa Practik 9 on offer and you will still get a very capable sewing machine with a wide range of possibilities.

In the end it depends a bit on your needs, maybe the Practik 9 is more than enough for the uses you are going to give it but as you have not specified, we can not specify more.

When the bobbin is low on thread, the sewing machine warns you and stops.
Once the bobbin has been refilled it still warns me and doesn't let me sew, it keeps giving this warning even when the bobbin is on, I have checked that it is OK, that there is no lint, I have tried turning the machine off and nothing.
In the instructions there is nothing related to this problem, which is why I'm so annoyed.
I don't know if you have had any experience similar to mine or if you can help me in any way.

The truth is that the problem you have is strange, it has never happened to us before and we had never heard of it.

As the Zart 01 is quite an advanced machine, the best thing to do is to call the Alfa technical service, tell them the error code that the machine gives you and they will surely be able to advise you much better. If you go to their website, they also have a contact form in case you want to save yourself the call.

In case they don't fix it, as the Alfa sewing machine is only 4 months old, you can always make use of the warranty and have it repaired.

I sew enough clothes for my children and what gives me more laziness is the thread tension in the shuttle so I would be thinking of an alfa compack 500 or alfa 474 by the theme of the vertical lanzader they say it is not necessary to regulate the tension is this true? And between the mechanical and electronic which is better?

    • Hi Lidya,

From what I've seen on the manufacturer's website, the Alfa 474 also has a horizontal shuttle so, in principle, it's not as you say.

As for whether to choose between electronic or mechanical sewing machine, usually the electronic ones are of higher quality, more precise, work in less time and offer a greater number of stitches. They are also more expensive, but between the models that you have proposed, we would go for the Alfa Compakt as the price difference between the two is not very big.

I also believe that the Alfa 4760 is a discontinued model, the manufacturer no longer offers it in their list of models, so in terms of spare parts or warranty, you could have problems buying a model that has already disappeared.
